Difference Between QWERTY Cell Phones and Touch Screen Smartphones

April 18th, 2010 by pacapao

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The upper level of smartphones is mainly divided between models of cellular phones with QWERTY keyboard and the touch screen phones. The main difference being that the QWERTY cell phone has a full QWERTY keyboard integrated into its main panel or concealed under a sliding panel. Touch-screen phones typically do not have the manual buttons or keys, and all functions are controlled by touch screen by pressing relevant active points. Some touch screen models have a navigation pod or several function keys. Apple iPhone is a typical example of a touch screen phone and BlackBerry is one of the most popular QWERTY cell phones. Sometimes BlackBerry is even used as a synonim for qwerty cell phones, however, it is not the first of its kind and not the only one.

Although the touch screen phones tend to be elegantly designed, they are quite awkward when you need to enter large chunks of data, participate in instant messaging or write a string of SMS messages. Never mind how stylish is a touch screen phone, it will unlikely be a serious business gadget. Writing e-mails, edit Word documents or Excel spreadsheets, sorting out the PowerPoint presentations – it is something that should be done easily with any modern smartphone. Can you do that without controls, i.e. buttons?

QWERTY mobile phone models like Pantech, HTC and Palm W class are running Windows Mobile OS. For PC Windows users it means a familiar environment and easy operation. Besides that, mobile phones on Windows are born to view and edit office documents, manage calendar and tasks, provide better e-mail and web browsing capabilities. They are also less prone to crashing.

Now a word about entertainment. It is good to get the job done but how about the leisure? MP3, video player and an enhanced digital camera are all necessary features that should be included in any basic smartphone. Both QWERTY cell phones and touch screen phones have these features on board unless we are talking about some older models.

So, where are the advantages of the iPhone and other touch screen phones? There are certain characteristics where the iPhone is still unsurpassed. These are memory volume and battery longevity. All iPhones are sold with 8 GB or 16 GB of memory, depending on the model specifications. All the major QWERTY cell phones are still lagging back with mere 128 MB of internal memory and the possibility of expanding the memory through MicroSD card slots. The buyer then has a challenge to find a suitable MicroSD card in an electronics shop. Speaking about the battery – iPhone has 5 hours talk or 6 hours Wi-Fi web browser time. You can leave it for 300 hours in standby mode. QWERTY cell phone models cannot offer such a long battery life.

In principle, when you think about selecting your perfect smartphone you will probably make your choice depending on your own style, taste and needs. You have to choose a mobile phone that will deliver all the essential elements of business operation and recreational opportunities. QWERTY mobile phone models typically offer enhanced business features, but many people believe that the small buttons on the keyboard are not suitable for their large thumbs. Now, that’s a somewhat exaggeration, folks! To make sure QWERTY cell phone is for you, buy it in a mobile phone shop, where you can test-drive several models. You need to hold it in the palm of your hand and feel the keypad buttons in order to verify if QWERTY cell phone suits your life-style.

Motorola Droid – Gadget of the Year

April 15th, 2010 by pacapao

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Motorola is trying to impress everyone either with its new products or the new details that can be added to the devices. But when talking about the smartphone Motorola Droid we see that this phone is trying to combine all of it into one body.

This smartphone turned out to be not only helpful to promote the Motorola company but managed to help out also the retailer company which was Verizon and to turn into a big ad for the Android. Soon after the release of this product a lot of companies started to use Android OS as a basis for their new products. Even some of the companies switched their attention from WinMo to Android.

This results could not be over-left and that’s why the main thing that happened to the smartphone was that it finally turned into a smartphone which received a lot of titles. One of the most significant ones comes from the Engadget. Its readers took part at the survey and as a result this smartphone received not a single but already 2 various titles: the gadget of the year and the GPS device of the year.

The main specs of this smartphone are: the Android OS, support for GPS and Wi-Fi, a 5 megapixel camera with a special Dual LED Flash and Image Stabilizer, but the main feature is the screen of the smartphone: its a 3.7 inch screen with a rather large 480X854 resolution and the QWERTY keyboard.

Even though the smartphone is not new in the mobile market, we might say that it is not losing and will not lose its actuality for still a long period of timing.

Motorola is one of the most outrageous and popular companies which offers a list of various smartphones especially putting the emphasize on the American and Middle East market. This time Motorola Droid made all of its efforts to represent Motorola company in its best light.

HTC and Windows – A Threatened Marriage

April 14th, 2010 by pacapao

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Taiwan-based High Tech Computer Corporation, better known as HTC in the mobile phone community, enjoys the distinction of being the world’s leader in smartphones outside of the Symbian OS currently dominated by Nokia.

But primarily because its main platform of choice ever since it started making and marketing smartphones has been Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, it can be more accurate to say that HTC is the largest smartphone maker using Windows. But late in 2009, HTC has began shifting its OS of choice to the more capable Android platform which has seen remarkable growth in its first year since being introduced in the late 2008.

A Debt of Gratitude to Windows

It’s no secret that the phenomenal rise of HTC from a relative unknown to a most sought after brand in smartphones largely began after Microsoft officially chose the company as its hardware development platform for showcasing its Windows Mobile operating system based on the Windows CE.

HTC is proud to have a heritage of world’s first releases which has cemented its reputation as being in the forefront of cutting-edge technical innovation. It’s quite understandable that as the development test bed for Microsoft’s mobile phone initiatives, HTC would enjoy a string of firsts.

It was HTC that launched the world’s first smartphone powered by Windows in 2002 and the world’s first smartphone with music playback features in 2004. HTC again landed as the world’s first Windows smartphones with 3G in 2005 and the first in tri band UMTS 3G a year later. Needless to say, HTC was always first in releasing smartphones running the latest Windows Mobile version updates.

Even before going into smartphones, HTC has been using MS for the world’s first Pocket PC launched in 2000, three years after the company was founded. It had marketed the world’s first palm sized PC with color display back in 1999 but without MS yet.

But its fame really shot up quite quickly starting in 2005 when HTC released the most powerful set of smartphones running the Windows Mobile 5.0 that had been immensely improved from its lackluster predecessor.

As a result, HTC’s sales revenue doubled to $2.2 billion in 2005 from its previous year and was listed as the fastest growing technology company in Business Week’s Info Tech 100. This was followed in early 2007 with a landmark device that redefined what a smartphone can do with the first HTC Advantage.

Its groundbreaking form factor included a 5-inch display with detachable full-QWERTY keyboard. Its revolutionary design incorporated just about everything the mobile executive need starting from a powerful 624 MHz processor with a dedicated ATI graphics accelerator to the fun features considered frills but have become standard on many smartphones like a 3.2 megapixel camera which was upscale at that time and multimedia players.

A Brighter Future

The emergence of Google’s Android was quickly taken by HTC gurus as the way to go for its future and promptly partnered with Google to produce its first Android smartphone in the Nexus One released early 2010. With Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro on the decline foreshadowed by the upcoming but still uncertain Windows Phone 7, HTC has diversified with Android as its alternative platform with the HTC Magic in 2009 as well as BREW in the HTC Smart for 2010. As an OEM, it gave T-Mobile and the world the first Android smartphone in 2008 with the T-Mobile G1 (rebranded from HTC Dream).

“Quantum Leap”

April 11th, 2010 by pacapao

“Quantum Leap” One of the best – Redhill – Eastern USA
First to make a correction – Amazon has incorrectly listed Ashley McConnel as the author when the it is actually Melanie Rawn who authored this book.

This has got to be one of the best, if not the best, QL book that was written. Ms. Rawn has a real grasp of the characters of Sam and Al. For me the real test of whether a novelization of a TV show has hit the money is if I can close my eyes and picture the actors speaking the words of dialogue in the book as the characters they portrayed. Ms. Rawn hits that dead on. While reading this I had no problem picturing Scott Bakula as Sam and Dean Stockwell as Al. This easily could have been an episode.
This is a well written (McConnell did most of the better Quantum Leap books) entry in the series. It goes back and tells a version of how the Project may have started (since Sam changes so many little details every time, the events surrounding the Project’s beginnings would always be changing, as the book states). It is good to see San and Al together in the Project here, one of the good things about the books is that we see more of the internal conflicts, with Verbeena, Donna, Al, and Gushie. I always wanted to see them developed more on the show, but the hour format didn’t leave enough time. Anyway, this has been out of print for a while, but if you can find it it is worth the effort. : In 1993, at a New Mexico research laboratory, Dr. Sam Beckett and Admiral Al Calavicci embark on an experiment in time travel called Project Quantum Leap and find themselves battling a determined foe out to stop the project. “Quantum Leap”

Working Together: Your Music, Movies, Photos on Your iPod, Cell Phone & PDA

April 9th, 2010 by pacapao

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Electronic device manufacturers and content producers have

got to back away from the forest and see the light filtering

throught the trees. Consumers want to control the content

they purchase and want to be able to use their electronic

devices together without restrictions placed on them.

Standards and interoperability will have to come to digital

devices, just as Google co-founder Larry Page said in his

Consumer Electronics Show keynote speech when he introduced

Google Video. Right now, only those video’s purchased through

Google Video that are NOT copy protected will play on video

iPods and Sony PSP’s – the rest only work on Google Video.

http://www.google.com/press/podium/ces2006.html

That news about Google Video and Digital Rights Management

(DRM) standards of interoperability had me fuming about my

inability to use my content (photos, movies, music) on

devices made by different manufacturers or between cell phone

providers. Today I ran across a story about an Anti-DRM group

in Britain campaigning to demand an end to DRM.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/18/drm_consumer_opposition/

Obviously I’m not the only one disturbed by the fact that I

cannot move digitally recorded movies from my Tivo to my DVD

recorder (purchased for exactly that reason, but before I

knew it wouldn’t work) I only found out that I couldn’t

record movies from the Tivo to the DVD recorder when I called

Pioneer customer support to ask why the recorder wouldn’t

record my movies. It seems that I can only move digital

movies from the Tivo to my computer (which I found I could do

with free Tivo Desktop software when I called Tivo customer

support.)

So instead of recording directly from my Tivo to my Pioneer

DVD recorder, I have to move the movie over to my computer

via Tivo Desktop software, then burn a DVD from my computer.

Very smart move on Tivo’s part, as it means I definitely

won’t buy the DVR from my satellite TV provider because they

don’t support skipping commercials, nor do they support

moving movies to my computer.

This also means I don’t NEED my Pioneer DVD recorder – so

their DRM which stops Tivo digitally recorded movies from

recording to DVD means that I won’t use that Pioneer DVD

recorder and will now sell it. The other DVD player connected

to my other television will suffice. If I want to record

something, it goes on the Tivo because it is so easy to use

and works so extremely well. I’ll use the free Tivo Desktop

software and move it to my computer and burn DVD’s of my

recorded television and movies there.

Clearly Tivo is doing all they can to make their device

consumer friendly – but they are being besieged by television

and movie content producers, who are screaming at them to

stop the “piracy” of their users. Tivo now disables the 30

second commercial skip button daily (which you have to know

how to program – Select, Play, Select, 3-0, Select). They do

this via automatically updated internal software because

advertisers screamed at them for several years about the

consumer ability to skip commercials. The result is that I

reprogram that function daily anyway – annoying, but not

nearly as annoying as not being able to control my own device

the way I want to.

I’m convinced that content producers will lose this battle

over the long term and I’ll do all I can to fight them

myself, like supporting anti-DRM groups wherever I find them.

And I’ll research more thoroughly before buying products

which contain DRM to make certain they will work with my

existing devices – meaning no Sony CD’s or DVD’s. There have

been rumors that Apple is creating a set-top box and service

similar to Tivo and I’d buy one in a split second as I’m sure

I could use my iPod, iMac and iPhoto seamlessly between all

devices.

Maybe they’ll make a phone with a Mac OS and a PDA as well (I

actually used to own an early Apple Newton PDA and oh, how I

wish they had continued to develop that wonderful little

thing). I’m happy to use anything Apple produces – but I

won’t switch cell providers or switch my Satellite TV

provider. Interoperability and standards are essential to me.

It’s about choice. Pioneer limited my choices and lost a

customer and Motorola lost my ROKR iTunes phone business

because the device is only available from Cingular.

Obviously, I’m a Mac user and had studiously avoided

purchasing Windows machines until I had to buy a Windows box

to run business software not available for my Apple machines.

So I bought an extremely cheap $299 PC to run the three

programs that won’t run on my Mac. That cheap machine now

serves as my DVD burner for movies (with a cheap external

hard drive as movie storage drive). Pioneer lost a customer

because they don’t allow me to record movies to DVD from my

Tivo. How about a Tivo/Apple partnership? That would be a

marriage made in heaven due to the customer-centric design

and usability so elegantly addressed by both companies.

I’ll put up with Apple’s walled garden (iTunes and

proprietary AAC files) and their own DRM only as long as

everything they make works seamlessly together. Apple

products always have worked elegantly together and probably

always will. Somehow most third party software seems to

interact well with everything else on the Macs. The moment

Motorola makes that ROKR iTunes phone available through MY

cellular provider, I’ll consider buying that phone.

Being in the market for a phone, I had been looking at a Palm

Treo 650 phone/PDA and was excited when they introduced the

new 700 model, just as I was about to make that purchase. So

I read a few reviews and discovered to my horror that Palm

just fell victim to the dominance of Microsoft and replaced

their own well designed Palm operating system on that new

Treo 700 with a buggy, slow and cumbersome Windows OS!

In the process they lost another customer, because I can’t

stand the clunky way one must navigate with Windows

(reviewers agree) and refuse to buy that machine now, the

same way I avoided all other PDA’s running Windows for the

past 10 years. This is all because Palm couldn’t port

Microsoft documents and Windows related bits to the Palm OS

when corporate users required that interoperability. Thanks

to Gates & Company, Palm lost another customer – and their

own elegant OS.

If mainstream electronics device manufacturers continue to

take the path of least resistance by kowtowing to content

producers, lowest common denominator software and stifled

functionality and interoperability, then consumers will

eventually find a way to take back the control. We’ll avoid

buying products (CD’s & DVD’s, “rented” music) that don’t

work with their existing devices (Tivo’s, DVD recorders,

PDA’s, iPods) and will find companies that make all of this

stuff work together and buy from them – but only so long as

ALL devices and ALL content work with each other

interchangeably.
